Summertime…

June 20, 2012

Now I remember…

The sun that sparkles off the ocean, sometimes hazy with the inversion layer that hangs off the summertime coast…

The soft feel of the humid air before it turns sticky in the heat of the day…

The ripe fruit – berries, peaches, nectarines, cherries, grapes, cantaloupe, watermelon, pineapple – fresh, sliced and macerated, grilled, baked…

The smell of freshly cut lawns, blackberry flowers, seaweed…

The irises and flox and stocks and lilies and lupine and buttercups and dandelions and lilacs and other riotously colorful eye-delighters…

The faint movement of air provided by the rotating fan in the corner of both our rooms…

The birds, butterflies, squirrels and chipmunks which provide entertainment for my cats and dog, darting in and out of planters, flower beds and feeders…

Farmers markets brimming with tantalizing fruits and veggies such as tiny white turnips and rainbow-hewed beets, fresh local cheeses and meats and perennials…

The knowledge that summer won’t last very long and I will miss it very much when it is gone, so I must soak up every bit of it now…
