Where’s my camera when I need it?

September 14, 2010

I drove the back road to work yesterday.  This takes me through meadows and woods, cornfields and hayfields.  This time of year, the fields are usually full of Canada geese who stop off for a snack on their way south for the winter.  But yesterday, I was cursing the fact that I was driving and couldn’t get my hands on my camera in time…as I drove through a nature conservancy area, I was startled to see a hawk-like bird soar over head…then it dipped in front of me and flew a few feet above the road in front of me for the next mile…it swooped around corners and glided down the straightaways…like one of those chase rabbits that pace the greyhounds on the track…RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME!!!  What an amazing experience!

I called it a hawk-like bird because it looked like a hawk, but was almost all brown and had a differently shaped beak structure…haven’t been able to positively identify it through research, but it may have been a Cooper’s Hawk that didn’t let me see any of the white on its belly.  But it was magnificent.

Ahhh…country life and scenic commutes…
