Opening night…

February 26, 2010

Ahhhhh…we made it through the always adventurous event known as Tech Week and are moving into Opening Night territory.  This has been such a journey…the show that was SUPPOSED to open tonight was Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.  Unfortunately, in the first month of production, that excruciatingly painful, heavy and battering script took its toll on three sets of actors, leaving us with a gaping hole in our season.  In our board meeting, we tossed out as a conversation starter a script that had been favored for next season…thus, the dream of The Dixie Swim Club was born.  Fortunately, finding a director, casting the show and then bringing the concept to the stage were quick and relatively painless.  Best of all was the fun this cast has had through the whole process…rehearsals are sometimes exhausting, sometimes frustrating, sometimes a giggle-fest…get five experienced actors of the female persuasion on stage together for any length of time and sometimes the fun just bubbles over.

This will be our first night with an audience…at least, we hope there will be an audience.  Although greater Boston avoided the snow that was gifted on NYC yesterday, we were pounded with driving rain and howling wind, with the storm forecasted to last into Sunday.  We just hope that hardy New Englanders are willing to brave the elements and join us on the Outer Banks of North Carolina on a weekend in August.  This show is a comedy and we have yet to perform in front of an audience…you can rehearse the heck out of a show and it will STILL take on a totally different dimension once you add in the audience.  That is really what it is all about…the synergy between the show and the audience.  Here’s to synergy!

As the sign says, don’t swim alone…we’re hoping for a packed pool tonight!<G>
