In the news…

August 28, 2009

What a week!  Ted Kennedy succumbed to his brain cancer this week.  Having lived in New England for most of the last 35 years, we have had a unique view of what the Kennedy Family has meant to New Englanders.  Streets and highways were lined with people holding signs saying “Thank you, Teddy” and clapping and waving.  Parents brought their parents and their children.  People my age who never knew life without Ted Kennedy as their Senator….he was accessible, he was caring, he was human…lots of tears for the loss of someone who did many good deeds.  Massachusetts is showing the love for Senator Kennedy.

Then there is the story of the 29yo California woman who was kidnapped at age 11 by a sex offender and his wife…Jaycee Dugard was kept in a “backyard within a backyard” that was totally enclosed by shrubbery, living in sheds and tents, had two children fathered by the sex offender, the first when she was thirteen or fourteen…it never ceases to amaze me what we humans do to others.  Horrifying…and worse than what happened already is what Jaycee and her children, now 15 and 11, will be going through from hereon.

And, on the lighter side, Nick Green, a versatile Red Sox infielder, threw two innings of scoreless baseball against the White Sox last night…first time he had thrown to a catcher in 11 years.  One of those fantasy moments in life, I would think.
