Oh, my aching head…

I know I don’t drink well. I feel the affects of alcohol very quickly…or, less kindly, I am a cheap drunk. Plus, I really hate the after affects. I am a migrainer and I don’t need any excuses for extra headaches. However, I really love it while I’m tipsy. It makes my underlying shyness take a back seat. So every now and again, I succumb. Last night, I succumbed. We held a wake for our production of You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown. Due to a lot of things beyond our control, we had to cancel our production. I drank a few very potent and delicious cosmos and was pleasantly relaxed. I woke up this morning with a headache…duh…a dose of advil, then Excedrin Migraine a couple of hours later and I’m hoping it will be history. Human nature is such a fascinating thing.

OK, I think I’ll take a little nap now…

My head is spinning…

I admit it. I’m an email junkie. I work all day at a computer with internet access. On nights I don’t have rehearsal, I have my laptop with me. Suddenly my son and I (we share a Verizon family plan) got a hankering for a Voyager or a Blackberry. He is leaving next month on a long bike trip and could use an all-in-one unit (GPS, etc.). I am very proud of myself. I have been doing research. This is not like me. I have impulse issues and am not the most patient person. But this little adventure isn’t cheap and there are just WAY too many things to think about. The bottom line is that either of those two options commits me to spending $80-90 a month for a cell phone, for pity’s sake. What is wrong with me?

We’ll see how long I can resist.

Getting older…

My recent trip to NYC and the photos I took are fresh in my mind. But those photos… I included some of me (something I normally avoid like the plague) and now am forced to see what other people see when they look at me. When I think of how I look, I am still in my early 20s, with smooth skin and taut features. These photos show a woman with splotchy skin, tiny little eyes, a huge gap between the front teeth and an enormous double chin. WHO IS THAT?????????

That said, while in NYC, I had lunch at the Moda Restaurant (in my hotel). Before lunch, I was sitting in the lobby, planning my afternoon, when an older woman (70s or 80s, I would say) blew in. The concierge flew to her side, practically kissing her toes and welcoming “Lady so and so” back and “if there is ANYTHING I can do, please let me know.” I ended up being seated next to her in the restaurant. Lady so and so had had MAJOR facial work done. Her lips were plump and shiny, her cheekbones prominent, her eyes stretched wide open…it was incredibly sad to see. But that was before I saw myself in photos…I’ll bet Lady so and so photographs beautifully!<G>

Give my regards to Broadway…

What a weekend! P had business in NYC, so I begged an extra couple of days off and went with him. We drove down in a snowstorm Saturday morning. He worked, I played. I am such a scaredy cat, I told my boss and my good friend that I was too nervous to go to the theater by myself; they told me I was crazy to miss the chance. So I girded my loins Sunday afternoon. I took advantage of off-Broadway’s two week promotion called 20 at 20; you show up at any off-Broadway show 20 minutes before curtain and you can buy a ticket (if available) for $20. I saw Secrets of a Soccer Mom (in preview, it just happened to be the press performance) from the front row. The best part was that although the complex is called the Snapple Theater, the name over the door is the Jerry Orbach Theater…Jerry Orbach was my hero. It was meant to be. On Monday, I stood in line at the half-price TCKTS booth and got tickets for P and me to see Avenue Q. A great show, the symbiosis between the actor and his/her puppet was just amazing. See it when you can. The rest of the time, I walked around Manhattan for hours, people-watching and being one with the crowds, and eating and drinking (my new favorite is the lemon meringue martini I drank a few of in the Flatotel bar. I also got to spend time in the evenings (as well as the drive down and back up) with my husband, who has been working in a different state for months. Heavenly…

My new stated goal is to spend a long weekend every now and again on the road with my husband.  Good for us and good for me.
